For all you movie buffs out there who love to see your town on the big screen, we provide the following list of films that actually showcase some of our great town in the footage (and before you ask, we left out some of the obvious favorites like The Blues Brothers, The Untouchables and The Hunter since they were both just too easy).

  1. Sixteen Candles A young girl’s “sweet sixteenth” birthday becomes anything but special as she suffers from every embarrassment possible.
  2. Only the Lonely A Chicago cop must balance loyalty to his overbearing mother and a relationship with a shy funeral home worker.
  3. Nothing in Common A successful ad man (Tom Hanks) must juggle his ever-demanding career while his parents’ marriage breaks up.
  4. About Last Night A man and woman meet and try to have a romantic affair, despite their personal problems and the interference of their disapproving friends.
  5. Ordinary People The accidental death of the older son of an affluent family deeply strains the relationships among the bitter mother, the good-natured father, and the guilt-ridden younger son.
  6. Road to Perdition Bonds of loyalty are put to the test when a hit man’s son witnesses what his father does for a living.
  7. Dislocation In February 2002, families living in the Robert Taylor Homes public housing development were given a 180 day notice of eviction. The movie chronicles the lives of tenants in one building as they move through the six-month relocation process.
  8. Public Enemies The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
  9. The Fury A government agent is determined to come to his son’s rescue, when a sinister official kidnaps him to harbor his extremely powerful psychic abilities.
  10. Mercury Rising Bruce Willis is an outcast FBI agent who is assigned to protect a 9 year old autistic boy who is the target for assassins after cracking a top secret government code.

There’s more, of course; we offer these up simply to whet your appetite for “all things Chicago!”
